03 and Mesosphere (Ozone layer)
Anyone know what 03 is? its in the Ozone layer of the atmosphere. filters most UV light. without it we would die. pretty cool huh?

Re: 03 and Mesosphere (Ozone layer)
I know, that's what i studied this month in Geography. If i'm right it reflects or absortb 44% of the UV's.
(Not sure)
The bad thing is that we're killing it! With those ilegal sprays, CFC's and something more. THey're ilegal at Europe sure, but what about Asia? China??!?...
It's supposed to be cold up there, but there, it's more hot than between it and ground! Because it aborb's part of the UV's and stay's with the heat.

Re: 03 and Mesosphere (Ozone layer)
It is an allotrope of oxygen that is much less stable than the diatomic O2. Ground-level ozone is an air pollutant with harmful effects on the respiratory systems of animals.
Ozone is a pale blue gas, slightly soluble in water and much more soluble in inert non-polar solvents such as carbon tetrachloride or fluorocarbons, where it forms a blue solution. At –112 °C, it condenses to form a dark blue liquid. It is dangerous to allow this liquid to warm to its boiling point, because both concentrated gaseous ozone and liquid ozone can detonate. At temperatures below –193 °C, it forms a violet-black solid.
The highest levels of ozone in the atmosphere are in the stratosphere, in a region also known as the ozone layer between about 10 km and 50 km above the surface (or between about 6 and 31 miles). Here it filters out photons with shorter wavelengths (less than 320 nm) of ultraviolet light, also called UV rays, (270 to 400 nm) from the Sun that would be harmful to most forms of life in large doses. These same wavelengths are also among those responsible for the production of vitamin D in humans. Ozone in the stratosphere is mostly produced from ultraviolet rays reacting with oxygen:
O2 + photon(radiation< 240 nm) → 2 O
O + O2 → O3
It is destroyed by the reaction with atomic oxygen:
O3 + O → 2 O2
(From wikipedia)
I think ts not only the ozone that absorbs the UV lights, i think its the reaction that forms ozone (but im not very sure)

Well if it we're, we would be dead. This answer your doubt?
There's a lot of atmospheres that do absorb and reflect, i think like.. hmm... 3 or 4. Not sure

Re: 03 and Mesosphere (Ozone layer)
Well, i gues im wrong the
BTW? is it realy that hot up there? i thought the UV light it absorbs is lessend in energy and turnd into blue light, witch we see as the sky.

Strange wikipedia is.. incomplete. English one isn't very well, but french one has all the informations. Nero, ur from Belgium, you must know french.
Read this: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosph%C3%A8re_terrestre
There's all the others protective layers and etc.

1st: If we cut emisions of ggreenhousegasses completly (with we i mean europe and america) Chona and azia would still emit more than enought to get uss all killed.
2nd: What heat is it staying with?

I know the first. Second?
UV's are hot! Don't you think? Ozone layer absorb's one part of them and impeachs it from going to ground. So, it heats up, with the absorbed part. It heats the temperature to 2-3 Cº.

English part doesn't explain that. Strange.

Re: 03 and Mesosphere (Ozone layer)
ozone levels are going better.(CFC emissions are banned)
the real worry is global warming. they say that at current rate of pollution, temperature will rise 2 degree by 2050. wouldn't sound much, but that much rise can cause a lot of the ice in and around the poles to melt and many of the coastal cities to drown. 40% of world's population lives around coasts and the percentage is actually increasing.
so they better find a solution or send all of us to mars
got a bit offtopic i think.
Btw, nice idea to have this forum..
