I wanna make maps!
hey guys, I saw Nero and Pauke and DeoX making maps, so I was wondering where to get the editor and which one is best to use? If you could also tell me how to install it that would be great.
Thanks

Re: I wanna make maps!
There is a map making editor in your savage folder. Open editor.bat and create a new map

Re: I wanna make maps!
the easyest way is using a hieghtmap. thers a turotial on that. The hardest and most boring part are the ocluders. But dont explect to throw out a map in 2 hours, a good map takes a day of work. and ad one for debugig and testing

Re: I wanna make maps!
I never used tutorial , i discovered everything by myself and created my own style so , i think you must do same , so you'll discover and use the editor faster , but you need one or two weeks of training before starting a map , good luck

Re: I wanna make maps!
Envy,
I very strongly recommend reading tutorials, despite what Pauke has said, there is a lot to learn and it is made many times easier by reading other map makers hard won experience.
Below is a couple of links, if you spend some time reading and absorbing the information, you will find you will make much quicker progress than stumbling around alone in the editor.
http://www.evolvedserver.com/savagemapping/
(this guide is written for SFE however it is still mostly relevant... only some of the GUI has changed, and it is a really well written guide)
http://www.newerth.com/smf/index.php/topic,8427.0.html
(this is a link to a thread overon has made which combines a multitude of resources into the once compact post)
http://www.newerth.com/smf/index.php/topic,8652.0.html
(this is a thread showing my personal binds and outlining their uses, it is INVALUABLE to making mapping faster/easier and more professional)
I am also in the process of working on an XR editor guide, its only about 40% complete at the moment, but keep your eyes peeled because it will hopefully help you all understand the mapping process much better.

Rmod only changes the GUI of the editor. So all the principals are exactly the same as the XR editor and SFE editor. To be honest I prefer the XR editors GUI anyway. However the links I have provided you with don't change, they are just as useful with Rmod as they are with XR or SFE.

I tried making maps but my problem is that, I think the map is good, then I try to make it better, better, better, better and it becomes a piece of s**t at the end

Nothing substitutes practice mate, just keep trying and open up maps from other map makers too see what they do in their maps to improve them.

Re: I wanna make maps!
Well... For me, making maps is just like drawing. You kinda have the talent for it. You can't really learn it, it's something you were born with
It's like football, if you can't play football at 5, you will never be able to play it. Not even if Pele teaches you.
I tried following tutorials, but I just fail epicly =/

Pele is Pele because he got up everyday and practised. If he had kicked a football 1 or 2 times and said "I can't do this" then he never would have improved to be the player he was. Same can be said of drawing or map making or anything else you want to name. Yes some natural talent can make it easier, but nothing substitutes hard work or practice.
Persistence is key my friend!

Re: I wanna make maps!
True that. I'll try
But, I get frustrated when I fail. Ehehe.
Only thing I keep trying is football. That's the only thing I can keep doing without getting frustratde.
I'll just see map making like football and I'm sure it will be alright

Re: I wanna make maps!
That is one stellar, professional, and clean-looking document Aneurysm! Goodness, I only quickly skimmed through but that kind of tutorial is usually only seen in very organized, or professional settings (businesses, corporations, large-scale organizations). I'm very impressed, and will be including a link to your tutorial in a new topic for mapping I'll be creating soon.
Well done. For the level of writing, editing screenshots, placing captions, arrows, headings, etc....that all must have taken huge amounts of time. I myself will read this tutorial sometime in the future when I decide to try out mapping (just for my own amusement, not to make maps to actually submit for public servers.)
Well, well, very well done.

Thank you very much for the compliments. Oh and yes I would be lying if I said it didn't take me much time.
